Widows: The Heart of God – 1 Timothy 5:9a

by | TTT&P

9A widow is to be put on the list …

Christlikeness transforms relationships; that is because, in Christ, we have received an eternity’s worth of blessings. The one who has been embraced and arrested by God’s grace instinctively becomes a conduit of that grace to others.

Paul puts this into words encouraging or fanning this truth into real action:

So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith. (Gal. 6:10)

The concentric circles of caring (or doing good to others) begin in our families first. Then our care expands to “especially” other believers. That would include first of all those in closest fellowship with us, namely, the church. Remember, Paul is writing to Timothy about behavior in the church (1 Tim. 3:15). Finally, the good works must extend to those outside of the church, that is, unbelievers.

Why so much focus on widows? Because God gives them special attention! Codified in the Law of Moses, He speaks in no uncertain terms:

“So circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer. For the Lord your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe. He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing.” (Deut. 10:16–18).

He severely judged Israel for neglecting the widows:

Your rulers are rebels and companions of thieves; everyone loves a bribe and chases after rewards. They do not defend the orphan, nor does the widow’s plea come before them. (Isaiah 1:23)

He harshly condemned the religious leaders “who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation” (Mark 12:40). We don’t want to be on the wrong side of our Lord’s heart!

Paul reflects the heart of God for women whose husbands have been taken away from them. The question is: on which side of God’s heart am I? On which side are you?

Lord, thank You for reminding me again of Your heart for those in need.
