³ For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. ⁴ For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.

Comparison with Moses continues. Though Christ is really incomparable, God uses very human instruments to which we can relate, in order to express to us how much greater Jesus Christ is than anything we know or can imagine.

Jesus is counted worthy. He is deserving of a glory that is not only greater than Moses, but is commensurate with His status as a builder of a house. Moses was a member of the household of God, that is, Israel. Jesus, however, is not just a member of the household, He is the one who built the house of Israel.

For the original intended readers of this letter to the “Hebrews,” Moses the man was the epitome of how to relate to God. The Ten Commandments, along with the many other ancillary commandments, were collectively called “the Law of Moses.” That is just how central he was to the Jewish people. That certainly is a role of glory and honor for Moses. His heritage was not just a gravestone inscribed with a benign epithet and then lost to antiquity. He remains one of the most highly regarded individuals in all of human history. Although Abraham was the father of the Jewish nation, Moses was “the Lawgiver,” the messenger who conveyed the founding documents of the Jewish nation under God.

However, Christ is so much greater than Moses and deserves a glory and honor so much greater than Moses. The analogy is given to express this comparison. Moses, as great as he is, is like being part of a house, that is a family, the household. But the Son of God is like the one who constructed the house, the builder. The builder, it follows, is much greater than the thing he builds. Therefore, Jesus is greater than Moses. But wait, there is more.

There are different levels of builders. Every house has an individual builder. And if Jesus had been simply the builder of the house of Israel, that would be enough to make Him greater than Moses. But, He is also the builder of everything! “All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being” (John 1:3). “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him” (Col 1:16). Jesus’ glory and honor is magnified exponentially and infinitely – way more than Moses’ glory and honor.
