Model of Faithfulness – Hebrews 3:2

by | Hebrews

2 He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was in all His house.

Faithfulness – that’s the model of Moses and it is ultimately exhibited in the Son of God. Moses, as great as he was, is a shadow, a picture of what Christ was going to be.

First Moses. What a test of his character he went through. At first he was reluctant to become the leader of God’s people because of his own perceived limitations. “Who am I …?” (Exodus 3:11). Then he said, essentially, “Who should I tell them sent me? (Ex 3:12-13). “What if they will not believe me or listen to what I say … ” (Ex 4:1). “I have never been eloquent … I am slow of speech and slow of tongue” (Ex 4:10). Finally, “Please, Lord, now send the message by whomever You will” (Ex 4:13). Anyone, except me! Doesn’t sound like faithfulness to me.

But, Moses learned faithfulness. By the time God had worked the 10 miraculous disasters upon Egypt and freed the people of Israel from slavery, Moses was a different man. The faithfulness of God in fulfilling His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob by supernaturally rescuing His people had a way of breeding faithfulness in Moses. Not only did Moses take on the point position in God’s workings, albeit reluctantly and under great duress, he then rose to a level of commitment and self-sacrifice rarely seen anywhere.

God set the stage in the desert of Sinai when He threatened to destroy the people for their lack of faithfulness to Him (they offered sacrifices to the Egyptian gods at the very time Moses was on Mt. Sinai receiving the Law) and transfer the promises to Moses and his descendants only (Ex 32:10). Moses pleaded with God to, “Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants to whom You swore by Yourself, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ” (Ex 32:13). Moses became concerned for the Lord’s reputation (Num 14:13-17) and he put his own life on the line: “But now, if You will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out from Your book which You have written!” (Ex 32:32). That is faithfulness! God’s response? “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Ex 33:14). He would not reject His people and would “give you rest.”

The point at this juncture in our passage in Hebrews is that just as Moses was faithful among God’s people, Jesus was also faithful among God’s people.

Lord, You have been faithful to me in revealing the life and actions of the Lord Jesus Christ. So I desire to be faithful to You. Help me keep my eyes on You.
