Three weeks into my recovery from total-hip replacement (a long time coming), and things are on schedule in the mending process. What a miracle of modern medicine that a significant load-bearing part of my skeletal structure has been replaced with titanium. I’m looking forward to climbing Half-Dome in Yosemite in my overly optimistic, self-motivational talk.
Maybe in 5-10 years, technology will advance to the point where I could upgrade my hips (and my entire legs) to a dynamic, futuristic version controllable by an iPhone app. I could run and jump with robo-digitally-enhanced strength and never raise my heartbeat or work up a sweat. I’d turn it up to max and see what it could do on a clear day. Maybe even add a hands-off autopilot so I can sleep as my body runs to my destination, curves and all.
Such is fun to dream. But, what I have now is a huge blessing from God, to be able to walk without pain or a heavy limp. However, His blessings come in small sizes also. My little 4.5-year-old grandson has been a big helper to me. He seems to have considered it his life calling to help Papa through his surgery recovery. He brings my walker or cane to me, the wedge pillow for my legs; anything that falls on the floor he picks up. At breakfast this morning, he pointed out something smudged on the floor. When he saw me try to bend down for a closer look, he went immediately for a wet paper towel and got down on all fours to wipe it up. He also regularly gets my ice packs for me, though this usually comes with laughter when he “sneaks” up and puts one on my neck, knowing it will get a surprising rise out of me. How good is that!
As I get healthier and stronger from my surgery, I will be less in need of that help, but what a delight it has been to be the recipient of his commitment and joy in serving me, so abundantly displayed. I suspect that he will want to continue to serve like that. Not that I will need it after I fully recover, but I look forward to serving with him, as we discover how we can help others. His enthusiasm and fulfillment spur me on to serve my heavenly Papa in a similar child-like way, to find things I can do for the Lord with commitment and joy. And as a bonus, the pleasure of serving the Lord is magnified when we do it with others. How good is that!
“Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant … just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (Matt. 20:26–28)
