How Can We Know for Sure?

by | IMHO Blog

One of the most common struggles for new believers is not always “feeling” that they are saved. Without a doubt, the Lord wants all Christians to be confidently assured of their relationship with Him. This confidence does not come from the unreliable, changing grounds of emotional feelings but from the promises and assurances of God. When we understand the Lord’s message and trust in what He says, we will experience the blessings, assurances, peace and security that are there for us in our personal relationship with the Living God. Here are some basic promises and truths we find in Scripture (to be sure, not an exhaustive list, but a good foundation for our assurance).

God desires us to be Sure of and Realize our Salvation

  • 1 John 5:10-13 We may know that we are saved.
  • Rom. 11:11-24 We have been “grafted in” or adopted into God’s family.
  • Eph. 2:8 We’re saved by grace through faith as a “Gift’ from God, not something we earn, but receive by faith.
  • Rom. 10: 1 Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
  • John 3:16 We are called to trust in, cling to and rely upon God’s free gift.
  • John 5:24 We are saved by believing, not by feelings.
  • Romans 12:3 We have all been given a “measure of faith.”
  • Eph. 1:1-13 As we trust in the Lord, we are “sealed” into His family.

God Saves us and Keeps us

  • John 10:9-11, 27-28 We’re His sheep… no one can “snatch” us out of His hand.
  • I Thess. 5:1-11 God appoints us to be saved.
  • Rom. 8:28-39 Nothing can separate us from His love; even we ourselves can do nothing to forfeit God’s love and, therefore, our security in Him.
  • II Tim. 1:12 God is able to “keep” those believing in Him.
  • Heb. 13:5 He will never leave or forsake us.

God Is Longsuffering and Waits with open arms

  • John 3:17 Jesus came not to condemn but to save.
  • Luke 15:11-24 God always welcomes a prodigal child back.
  • John 6:37 “If any man would come unto Me…”
  • Luke 19:10 Jesus came to seek and to save the lost.
  • II Peter 3:9 God is not slack, but patient and longsuffering.

While Satan, the “deceiver of the brethren” and “father of lies” wants to confuse, confound and cause us to doubt our faith, he cannot undo the eternal truth that we are “New Creatures in Christ.” Our salvation is absolutely sure, and we can know it!

Our Salvation is Certain

  • 2 Cor. 5:17 Any person “in Christ” has become a new creature, old things have passed away, and all things have become new.
  • I John 1:9 God forgives and cleanses the repentant sinner.
  • I John 5:10-13 God’s forgiveness is absolutely sure.
  • Psalm 103:12 “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
  • Phil. 1:6 God will complete His work in us.
  • John 1: 12 Those receiving Him are “sons of God.”
  • John 14:1-3 The Lord has prepared an eternal “mansion” for us.
  • I Peter 1:3-5 Our eternity is “incorruptible,” “kept” and “will not fade away.”
  • Rev. 22:1-5 Forever we will reign with Him.

With God, forever and eternal are just that. Our eternal life is not temporal, and we can know we have it. God wants us to be assured! This is the freedom we have in Him. No law and no sin can undo what God has done! That is our assurance from God!

Priesthood for “Average” Believers

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, then you are a believer-priest. That’s amazing! What?? Let me explain. In the New Testament (NT), there is no special clergy class that is holier than the rest of us, a cut above the rank and...

Superlative Praise – Psalm 149

1Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise in the congregation of the godly ones. Superlative praise, extolling God ‘to the max,’ is the theme of this psalm. There is nothing meager about this kind of praise. It is the antidote to an old and tired...
