The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. (Psalm 23:1)

One of the most beloved portions of all Scripture, Psalm 23 has brought comfort to millions through the years, especially at times of loss and grief. As A.F. Kirkpatrick says in his commentary, The Book of Psalms, “Each sheep can claim the care which is promised to the whole flock.” The benefits from these promises come from knowing Yahweh Ra’ah, “The LORD is my Shepherd.” Nowhere do we see the meaning of His name Yahweh more poignantly expressed in such personal terms. Now we know Him through Jesus, who appropriated this title: “I am the Good Shepherd” (John 10:11).

In this psalm we see the benefits of knowing Yahweh Ra’ah:

• Contentment – “I shall not want” even in the midst of many needs.
• Relief – “He makes me lie down in green pastures” even when life seems hard and barren.
• Peace – “He leads me beside quiet waters” when life is in turmoil.
• Revival – “He restores my soul” when I struggle spiritually (Ps 19:7).
• Guidance in right living – “He guides me in the paths of righteousness” when the way forward seems convoluted.
• His purpose in our lives – “For His name’s sake” not mine.
• Confidence to replace fear – “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil” when things threaten me.
• His protective presence – “You are with me,” assuring me when I feel vulnerable.
• His concern for my well-being – “Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” when I feel unloved or uncared for.
• His enjoyment of me – “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies” when I feel marginalized.
• His fellowship – “You have anointed my head with oil” when I feel unacceptable (Ps 133).
• His blessing – “My cup overflows” even in the midst of earthly deprivation.
• Hope for this life – “Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life” when the outlook seems grim.
• An assured eternity – “And I will dwell in the house of the LORD” Amen!

Lord, You are my Shepherd. Thank You for Your real presence in my life.
