28 For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints a Son, made perfect forever.
No end to superlatives describing the Son, our passage continues exalting the superiority of Christ over the Levitical priesthood. The human author has gotten carried away with admiration, praise and illustrious commentary on the Son. But the Divine Author, superintending this communiqué from God, gives only a glimpse into this Subject of infinite proportions. How could mere words capture “the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature …of the Majesty on high”? (Heb 1:3).
This new way is superior to that of the Law in that those priests are mere men, but He is a son. They are many, but He is one. They are weak, but He is perfect. Theirs is a temporary priesthood, His is eternal. Theirs came by appointment by the Law, His came after the Law. Theirs came by covenant of the Law mediated by Moses, His through an oath directly by Word of God.
The passage tells us that Jesus was “made perfect,” that is, He completed what He came to do. Some false religions teach that He was not fully God, but a created being that needed to become god-like. But the Scripture does not teach that Christ was created. John 1:1 clearly says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Some say this should be translated as, “the Word was a god,” but that Jesus is not the same as Yahweh God, who is over all. Reputable Greek scholars disagree and have resoundingly shown that to be a false translation.
One thing that is certain in Scripture is the adamant insistence on monotheism, that there is only one God. “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!” (Deut 6:4). “I am the Lord, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images” (Is 42:8). “Before Me there was no God formed, and there will be none after Me. I, even I, am the Lord, and there is no savior besides Me. (Is 43:10b–11a). There is one and only one God. So if Jesus is a god, then He must be the God. In fact, to be a genuine Christian in the biblical sense means to acknowledge Him as God. “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved … for whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:9, 13). The last sentence quotes Joel 3:32, where Yahweh is clearly in view. So, in order to be saved, a person must believe that Jesus is Lord, that is Yahweh, the God over all.
Lord Jesus Christ, I worship You as the supreme God over all, the exalted One, who is exalted on high in all your Majesty. The Son made perfect forever.
