Christ Revealed In Me: Galatians 1:15-16a

by | Prison Epistles

15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles …

Paul’s authority rested in a greater background than his religious credentials; his was a sovereign commissioning by God. Some might object, “Where are the witnesses of this commissioning?” However, the Holy Spirit validated Paul’s authority using supernatural events, “The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles” (2 Cor 12:12). As he did with the Roman believers (see Rom 1:1), Paul here asserted his authority without reserve and did not rely on any human ordination or endorsement. The supernatural evidence speaks for itself!

His “set apartness” for the gospel took place at birth, which presupposes a prior contemplation by God in His “the predetermined plan” (see Acts 2:23, Eph 1:4). This selecting at or before birth also marked the prophet Jeremiah (Jer 1:5). Further it marked the Messiah (Isaiah 49:1). So this is a big deal! Likewise it is a big deal for all of us as well, who are redeemed by grace.

A few applications can be made, using God’s work in Paul’s life as our model (for following Paul’s example, see 1 Cor 4:16, 11:1, Phil 3:17, 4:9). First, God’s plan for our lives began long before we were converted, for God “chose us in Him before the foundation of the world” (Eph 1:4). Second, His plan for us is bathed in grace, it is a gift of life and service. Serving Him is a privilege.

Third, it all has to do with revealing Jesus Christ in us. God’s great purpose is to show off His Son! Fourth, this plan excites God, He is thrilled (“pleased”) with this magnificent scenario, for it restores what God originally intended, that we exist “in His image” (Gen 1:27). Sin has obscured that picture. Now Christ as the “second Adam” (1 Cor 15:45, Rom 5:14) perfectly reveals God: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation…” (Col 1:15a, see also 2 Cor 4:4);  “He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature …” (Heb 1:3). As with God’s working in Paul’s life, the Lord’s purpose is to reveal the image of His Son in each of us, for that is the picture God has in mind. Paul later addressed his readers, “My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you…” (Gal 4:19). That is the goal of the ministry to which he was called.

Finally, we, for our part, need to “be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you…” (2 Peter 1:10)

Lord, thank You for choosing me as a showpiece for revealing Your Son. Let me be the mantle piece on which the trophy of Christ might stand.
