Worship 52 Devos

This series of eMeds will direct us to Christ-centered worship that will help prepare our souls for remembering the Lord at communion (aka “the Lord’s Supper”) in particular. Too often worship today has become synonymous with the common medium of singing and music. But worship that is growing and developing in our souls arises from growing in our understanding and appreciating how much the Lord has loved us and sacrificed for us. This series of devotionals meditates on statements our Lord made just before, during, and after His crucifixion.

Invitation to Dinner Luke 22:15

God doesn’t ask us to do something that He wouldn’t do Himself. He is always our supreme example. So, He commands us five times in the New Testament to practice hospitality (Rom. 12:13, 1 Tim. 3:2, Titus 1:8, Heb. 3:2, 1 Peter 4:9). I take it that if He were...

“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24) Worship is a word that has different shades of meaning and is somewhat nuanced. Young people can worship rock stars—we have a sense of what that means, that they have...

God Is Greater Than … Hebrews 1:4

4… having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they. When we say that Jesus, the Son of God, is incomparable and in a completely different category of existence, we must clarify this to say He does not fit...

My Lord and My God John 20:28-29

Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.” (John 20:28–29) Worship is learned by example and not by teaching alone. God has left...

Jesus is God Worship 2 Peter 1:1

Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ …  (2 Peter 1:1) Nothing is more central to our Christian faith than the belief...

Jesus, the Living Narrative Matt. 4:10

Thirsty Worship Psalm 42:1-2

1As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God. 2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God? The believer’s heart, soul, and spirit longs for God. Our Creator made us for worship. And when...

Grief for Us Matt. 26:38

How Great Is His Love Matt. 26:39

39And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” What could possibly prompt the incarnate Lord Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, the...

Becoming Human John 12:27

Becoming Troubled John 12:27

27“Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.” What was the emotional experience Jesus had, and what caused this reaction in Him? The lexical definition of the word...

Agonizing Over Me Luke 22:44

Last Words (2) “Forgive Them” Luke 23:34a

23aBut Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” Whereas earlier Jesus called out, “My God, my God …” (Matt 27:46), here He calls out to His “Father.” He is the forsaken, but He is also the Son. What a strange...

Last Words (4) “I Thirst” John 19:28

28… Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” The Son of God, deity in the flesh, was thirsty! How can that be? The psalm to which Jesus alluded when He cried out, “My God, my God, why have...

Intelligent Worship Romans 12:1-2

God’s Foreknowledge Matthew 26:2

18And [Jesus] said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” Presence of mind would be an apt description of how Jesus conducted Himself on the last...

Glory Despite Evil Matthew 26:20-25

21As they were eating, He said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23And He answered, “He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray...

This Is My Body Matthew 26:26

26While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” What a strange thing to say and a frequently misunderstood comment. Christian history shows divergent...

Timelessly Forgiving Matthew 26:75

Unworthy to Worship Matthew 26:75

75And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly. Today’s upbeat “worship” services are a refreshing change from the dry, staid, straight-backed hard pews settings...

49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 And Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. The betrayer’s kiss, the ultimate form of treachery. Jesus was...

Angels at Bay Matthew 26:53-54

Abandoned Matthew 26:55-56

55At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures...

Silent and Composed Matt. 26:63-68

Final Silence Matt. 26:63

63But Jesus kept silent. We have been following the words of our Lord leading up to His death on the cross. But communication can take place when no words are uttered. A look can do it, or just a poignant silence at times when an answer might seem...

Conclusion on Worship

For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. (1 Cor. 2:2) We have been studying the words of our Lord in the last hours of His earthly life. Too often, this is left out of our thought life and meditations until a few...
