Great Commission in Action – 1 Thessalonians 1:8

by | TTT&P

8For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say anything.

Great Commission in action! The Thessalonians exemplified the local church doing what our Lord Jesus Christ designed it to do when He said:

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matt. 28:18–20)

Discipleship in action, Paul, and now the Thessalonians, practiced what the apostle later taught Timothy:

The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. (2 Tim. 2:2)

Paul was committed to his ministry as the apostle to the Gentiles (Gal 2:7–8) and taught the faith to the Thessalonians, who in turn taught the faith to others. Meanwhile the apostle moved on looking for others to convert, who would then tell others. Christianity is a “telling” religion, seeking converts to the one and only true God through Jesus Christ.

Notice the parallels with Jesus’ final instruction to His disciples:

… you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Thessalonica was the Jerusalem of Paul’s readers. Macedonia and Achaia were the Judea and Samaria for them. And finally, the “every place your faith toward God has gone forth” represents the “remotest part of the earth.” Yes, the Thessalonians were the model church, following the precise pattern Jesus and now Paul laid down for them.

Paul’s strategy was to find major cities where he would preach the gospel and establish believers, who became the local church in each city and began to live out the Great Commission by spreading their faith to the surrounding areas. No wonder Paul was thrilled with them and thanked God continually for them.

Lord, may the Great Commission saturate my soul and motivate my outreach.
