To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God, says this…” (Revelation 3:14)
Christ was not a created being, period. The Scripture is clear about that in many convincing passages. Yet false religions focus on these kinds of verses to assert that Jesus was only human, or a semi-god, a created being lower than the Creator God of the universe. What do we make of this?
First, we must examine the passage carefully. The passage does not say “the first created being.” It is better understood as Christ being the beginning agent of creation, the one who kicked it all off, so to speak. He inaugurated it. Second, we must review the Scriptures that are clear in relationship to the beginning of creation:
For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. (Col 1:16)
This statement would essentially be falsified if there were an exception, if Christ Himself were a created being. How could He create Himself?
For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. (Rom 11:36)
[F]or us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. (1 Cor 8:6)
He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. (Col 1:17)
These statements would be utter nonsense if Jesus Christ were a created being. Such could only be said of God, the Creator.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. (John 1:1–3).
Jesus Christ did not come into being; He already existed when creation began. If something has come into being (that is, was created), then it was created through Him. If not, then it simply would not exist. We can only make sense of this if we understand Jesus Christ to be the Beginning of Creation.
Lord, creation owes its existence to You, for You began it all. All praise to You.
