Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. (Isaiah 40:28)
Comprehensive in scope, this description or name combination of God stands in stark contrast to all the false gods Israel had run after in their idolatrous fall away from the Lord. Isaiah 40 begins the grand polemic against the notion of other gods that extends through chapter 48. Throughout this section, God declares through Isaiah His absolute uniqueness and greatness:
“I, the LORD, am the first, and with the last. I am He.” (Is 41:4)
“I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, and there will be none after Me. I, even I, am the LORD, and there is no savior besides Me.” (Is 43:10–11)
“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God besides Me.” (Is 44:6)
“I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides Me there is no God … there is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other … I am the LORD who does all these.” (Is 45:5–7)
“I am the LORD, and there is none else.” (Is 45:18)
“For I am God, and there is no other.” (Is 45:22)
“I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me.” (Is 46:9)
“I am, and there is no one besides Me.” (Is 47:10)
“I am He, I am the first, I am also the last. Surely My hand founded the earth, and My right hand spread out the heavens.” (Is 48:12–13)
He is the absolute God, the Creator of the universe, all that exists. There is nothing greater than He. Through faith in this One, we can run the race of life with endurance in this fallen and tempting world. “Those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary” (Is 40:30–31).
Lord, by faith I believe and trust in You, the absolute Creator of everything.
