Of Watches and Cell Phones

by | IMHO Blog

A cultural shift is taking place and it has to do with watches, as in wrist-watches. The younger generation can’t understand why a person would want to own a single function item like a wrist watch. After all, a cell phone (which every last teenager in the world owns!) can display the time, text (which is now a verb), play games and more … oh yeah, and make voice calls. Smart phones, the next step up from a “regular” cell phone,  will soon be as common as wrist watches (use to be). Those puppies can plot your geo-position, record notes (typed or voice), do e-mail, surf the net, take pictures and movies and work as a flashlight, spirit level and doodle pad.  You can read books and newspapers on them. Oh yeah, and make phone calls and display the time. Amazing things, eh!

What is more amazing, though, is the Word of God. It trains, corrects, reproves, instructs, warns, guides, encourages, comforts, challenges and gives life. It reveals God’s will and helps fight off temptation. As much as I like my cell phone and find it helpful for daily life,  I cannot live without the word of God! I am not smart enough to go through life without God’s help. And thankfully the cost of God’s word (unlike smart phones) is within reach of everyone (my church gives the Bible away free and you can download the NET Bible free).

PS, I was hoping my family would give me a new watch for my recent birthday. But, instead they gave me clothes, which indeed are indispensible for daily life as well! I  don’t really need a new watch anyway, I can tell time by looking at my phone.

PPS, why not give a Bible the next time someone at work has a birthday? Or a relative? Or a neighbor?

Pure Praise – Psalm 150

Priesthood for “Average” Believers

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, then you are a believer-priest. That’s amazing! What?? Let me explain. In the New Testament (NT), there is no special clergy class that is holier than the rest of us, a cut above the rank and...

Superlative Praise – Psalm 149

1Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise in the congregation of the godly ones. Superlative praise, extolling God ‘to the max,’ is the theme of this psalm. There is nothing meager about this kind of praise. It is the antidote to an old and tired...
