The owner of Segway, the personal-transporter company, died this past weekend when he drove his two-wheeled vehicle off a 30-foot cliff. Few details have emerged concerning the accident involving the company’s flagship product, a gyroscopically controlled unit—kind of like a scooter, but with the wheels side by side. Not a very good advertisement for the safety of the product, to be sure.
This reminds me that we human beings, as opposed to other kinds of beings, have a tendency to think we are “smart” enough to invent stuff we think will help us, but that can actually harm us instead. I wonder about governmental reform over health regulations—will it unleash a nightmare that will override the good it is supposed to bring? What about tinkering with DNA to make new, genetically-altered food sources—will that come back to bite us with a new disease or syndrome? What about tampering with embryonic research—what mutations will that introduce to the human gene pool? A new post-conception abortion pill is being introduced, another human solution to unwanted pregnancies—will the results be written up by future historians as a colossal tragedy for women’s health and loss of respect for life?
What about my little sin, a conscious ignoring of God’s truth in one part of my life? It seems such a good thing now, bringing some sort of human enjoyment, satisfaction, way of life, protection, or something my mind says is better than knowing and following God’s Word—will it result in a nagging absence of the sense of the Creator in my life? I’m not smart enough to figure all these things out. That’s why I am committed to God’s Word as the manual for my life, it is God’s DNA for the Christian. It is His wisdom.
“There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” Prov. 14:12
“The steps of a man are established by the Lord, And He delights in his way.” Psalm 37:23 (NASB)
