The US elections are over. Dreams ignited on one side, hopes dashed on the other. Promises, excitement, world-impacting–a new day is dawning. History making, epochal. Well, I’m not so sure … Don’t get me wrong, I pray for the US to turn the corner for peace (and also for the return of the economy!) — after all I don’t want conflict and hardship anymore than anyone else.

However, having been through a few elections (as far back as Jack Kennedy’s), I have observed that with each new administration some things get better and some things don’t. I’m not holding my breath, though. Actually, I have been encouraged to remember that I’m a citizen of another country (and I don’t mean the US or Canada). As Christians, we are citizens of the Kingdom of God (Eph 2:19) and are living in this broken world as ambassadors of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (2 Cor 5:20).  We are part of His foreign service corp on temporary assignment.

I enjoyed hearing of a woman who described herself as an ambassador of Jesus Christ, cleverly disguised as a factory worker.  That’s what I’m talking about. Some of us have a blown cover like me–it doesn’t sound too clever to say I am ambassador of Christ cleverly disguised as a preacher.  Like, duh! However, most of God’s service corp are infiltraters making beach heads into the corporate world, the service sector, the domestic front and the entertainment and recreation arenas.

Christians, let’s not forget who we are! Our earthly citizenship comes second–distant second–to our true nationality, namely God’s people. We are the minority who have choosen the narrow road and whose assignment is to help others escape the wide road (Matt 7:13).
